Why Kefir is Good for You
Kefir is a fermented drink made using kefir grains. These grains are made up of live bacteria and yeast.
There are two types of kefir: water, and milk kefir.
Water kefir is made by adding dried fruit and sugar to water with the water grains. Fermentation occurs when the grains consume the minerals and sugars, which release probiotics that can colonize the gut.
When milk kefir grains are added to milk, the grains consume the lactose releasing probiotics with other compounds in the process.
The infographic below by Authority Diet lists ten evidence-based health benefits of kefir. The good bacteria in kefir can colonize our gut; a benefit probiotic yogurt doesn’t have.
